Medical evidence plays a vital part in many criminal prosecutions, most notably when serious injury or physical abuse is part of the prosecution’s case. Now in its third edition, this book is an essential text for practitioners of clinical forensic medicine and for those who take them through judicial proceedings, be they prosecutors or defence lawyers. It is written by a team of skilled and experienced authors with practical issues firmly in mind. The book has been revised to take account of changes in both statute and case law that have occurred since publication of the previous edition as well as improvements in medical and scientific understanding. In particular, the approach to uncertainties in child abuse has been brought up to date and a completely new account of blood-borne viral diseases is included.

The use of thermodynamics in biological research can be equated to an energy book-keeping system. While the structure and function of a molecule is important, it is equally important to know what drives the energy force. These methods look to answer: What are the sources of energy that drive the function? Which of the pathways are of biological significance? As the base of macromolecular structures continues to expand through powerful techniques of molecular biology, such as X-ray crystal data and spectroscopy methods, the importance of tested and reliable methods for answering these questions will continue to expand as well. This volume presents sophisticated methods for estimating the thermodynamic parameters of specific protein-protein, protein-DNA and small molecule interactions. It elucidates the relationships between structure and energetics and their applications to molecular design, aiding researchers in the design of medically important molecules. It provides a ‘must-have’ methods volume that keeps MIE buyers and online subscribers up-to-date with the latest research. It offers step-by-step lab instructions, including necessary equipment, from a global research community.

Liposomes are cellular structures made up of lipid molecules. Important as a cellular model in the study of basic biology, Liposomes are also used in clinical applications such as drug delivery and virus studies. This work includes methods in liposome preparation, and physiochemical characterization of liposomes.

The field of genetics is rapidly evolving and new medical breakthroughs are occurring as a result of advances in knowledge of genetics. This series continually publishes important reviews of the broadest interest to geneticists and their colleagues in affiliated disciplines. It provides contrasting roles of VEGF, giving researchers a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of VEGF. It includes chapters that review research employing a variety of organisms, allowing researchers to compare and contrast. It focuses on material that translates basic research to real-life treatment applications, showing primary researchers how the basic science is being used in the clinical setting.

Understanding viscoelasticity is pertinent to design applications as diverse as earplugs, gaskets, computer disks, satellite stability, medical diagnosis, injury prevention, vibration abatement, tire performance, sports, spacecraft explosions, and music. This book fits a one-semester graduate course on the properties, analysis, and uses of viscoelastic materials. Those familiar with the author’s precursor book, Viscoelastic Solids, will see that this book contains many updates and expanded coverage of the materials science, causes of viscoelastic behavior, properties of materials of biological origin, and applications of viscoelastic materials. The theoretical presentation includes both transient and dynamic aspects, with emphasis on linear viscoelasticity to develop physical insight. Methods for the solution of stress analysis problems are developed and illustrated. Experimental methods for characterization of viscoelastic materials are explored in detail. Viscoelastic phenomena are described for a wide variety of materials, including viscoelastic composite materials. Applications of viscoelasticity and viscoelastic materials are illustrated with case studies.

The number-one reference on the topic now contains a wealth of new data: the entire relevant literature over the past six years has been painstakingly surveyed, resulting in hundreds of new descriptors being added to the list, and some 3,000 new references in the bibliography section. Volume 1 contains an alphabetical listing of more than 3300 descriptors and related terms for chemoinformatic analysis of chemical compound properties, while the second volume lists over 6,000 references selected from 450 journals. To make the data even more accessible, the introductory section has been completely re-written and now contains several ‘walk-through’ reading lists of selected keywords for novice users.

This work presents the underlying principles of cellular physiology and then covers the major organ systems – autonomic nervous system, neurophysiology, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, acid-base, gastrointestinal, endocrine and reproductive. It emphasizes clinical correlations through boxed case studies of classic disorders and explains clinical findings in terms of the underlying physiologic principles. Sample problems are provided together with numerical solutions and explanations of their application. Featured throughout the text are rhetorical questions which are posed in order to build reasoning skills and help students apply the principles they have learned.
