Research papers are the primary vehicle for the global communication of highly complex, fast-moving information, and they need to be written and understood by all participants quickly and effectively. Science communication is increasingly interdisciplinary, and potential consumers may include public institutions, funding bodies, business, industry, and government. The aim of Science Research Writing is to enable STEMM researchers to write coherent, functional research documents of all types, whether these are papers for publication, conference abstracts, doctoral theses, reports for sponsors or grant proposals.
The 2nd edition has been revised and refocused to serve the needs of all STEMM researchers: native and non-native speakers, veteran and early-stage researchers. The reverse-engineering approach in the book, developed by the author at Imperial College London, is designed to enable research writers to immediately improve the quality of their writing, develop a future-proof writing strategy and build lifelong, multi-functional competence. The approach is descriptive rather than prescriptive, using authentic, successful input to unpack current writing models and enable writers to discover not only what to do when writing about their research, but also how to do it, when, where, and why.
The book uses the research paper as an archetypal exemplar of a STEMM document. Written in an engaging and informative style. Its user-friendly format contains separate units on writing the Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Abstract and Title, each with extensive FAQ responses. A quick-reference Checklist and Tips section completes the book. The content has been radically updated to represent current practice and enable STEMM researchers to hone their science research writing skills – skills which make writing less time-consuming and therefore less daunting, which generate a clearer and more polished product, and which will be applicable in future endeavours regardless of specialisation or target readership.
