Introduction to SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR)

SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR) is a publicly available portal that includes the journals and country scientific indicators developed from the information contained in the Scopus® database (Elsevier B.V.). These indicators can be used to assess and analyze scientific domains. Journals can be compared or analysed separately. Country rankings may also be compared or analysed separately. Journals can be grouped by subject area (27 major thematic areas), subject category (313 specific subject categories) or by country. Citation data is drawn from over 34,100 titles from more than 5,000 international publishers and country performance metrics from 239 countries worldwide.

Understanding Indicators, Tables and Charts

SJR graphs

SJR Indicator
Represents the average number of weighted citations received in the selected year by documents published in the chosen journal during the previous three years. For example, it counts the weighted citations received in year X for documents published in the journal in years X-1, X-2, and X-3. See detailed description of SJR (PDF). The set of journals are ranked according to their SJR and divided into four equal groups (Quartiles), with Q1 representing the highest value and Q4 the lowest. The Quartile data is only available for Journals and Book Series.

H-index
The h-index expresses the journal's number of articles (h) that have received at least h citations. It quantifies both journal scientific output and scientific impact; it is also applicable to scientists, countries, etc. (See Hirsch, J.E. (2005)).

Total Documents
Number of documents published by a journal in the selected year. All types of documents are considered, including citable and non citable documents.

Total Documents (3 years)
Number of documents published by a journal in the three years prior to the selected year (documents from the selected year are excluded). For example, when year X is selected, documents published in years X-1, X-2, and X-3 are retrieved. All types of documents are considered, including both citable and non-citable documents.

Citable Documents (3 years)
Number of citable documents published by a journal in the three years prior to the selected year (documents from the selected year are excluded). Only articles, reviews and conference papers are considered.

Non-citable Docs.
Ratio of non-citable documents in the three years prior to the selected year (documents from the selected year are excluded).

Total Cites (3 years)
Number of citations received by a journal for documents published in the previous three years (i.e. citations received in year X to documents published in years X-1, X-2 and X-3). All types of documents are considered.

Cites per Document (2 years)
Average citations per document over a two-year period. It is calculated by considering the number of citations received by a journal in the current year for documents published in the previous two years. For example, citations received in year X for documents published in years X-1 and X-2.

Cites per Document (3 years)
Average citations per document over a three-year period. It is calculated by considering the number of citations received by a journal in the current year for documents published in the previous three years. For example, citations received in year X for documents published in years X-1, X-2, and X-3.

Cites per Document (4 years)
Average citations per document over a four-year period. It is computed by considering the number of citations received by a journal in the current year for documents published in the previous four years. For example, citations received in year X for documents published in years X-1, X-2, X-3, and X-4.

Self Cites
The number of citations by a journal in the selected year to its own documents published in the previous three years. For example, self-citations in year X to documents published in years X-1, X-2, and X-3. All types of documents are considered.

Cited Documents
Number of documents cited at least once in the three previous years. For example, the cited documents in year X represent the total cited documents in years X-1, X-2 and X-3.

Uncited Documents
Number of uncited documents in the three previous years. For example, the uncited documents in year X represent the total uncited documents in years X-1, X-2 and X-3.

Total References
It includes all the bibliographical references in a journal in the selected year.

References per Document
Average number of references per document in the selected year.

% International Collaboration
Document ratio whose affiliation includes more than one country address.

% Female Authors
Percentage of female authors. To determine the gender of authors, a method based on given names was employed, grounded in "cultural consensus theory".

Documents cited by public policy (Overton)
Number of documents cited by public policy documents according to Overton database.

Documents related to SDGs (UN)
Number of documents related to the Sustainable Development Goals defined by the United Nations according to the Elsevier 2023 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Mapping. Available from 2018 onwards.

ESTIMATED APC
It estimates the article processing charges (APCs) a journal might charge, based on its visibility, prestige, and impact as measured by the SJR. It does not reflect the actual APC, but rather a calculated approximation based on journal quality.

ESTIMATED Financial Value
It represents the potential financial worth of a journal. It is obtained by multiplying the journal's Estimated APC by the total number of citable documents published over the past five years. This value reflects the hypothetical revenue a journal could generate based on its estimated publication costs and scholarly output.
